Authoritative Provenance

Nutrition Data Provenance & Verification Standards

Every calorie count, macronutrient gram, and micronutrient measurement on Calorie.Live is anchored in authoritative laboratory records. Learn how our data pipeline ingests, normalizes, and verifies food items from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

1. Primary Source: USDA FoodData Central (FDC)

Our nutrition dataset is curated exclusively from USDA FoodData Central, managed by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). We ingest records primarily from two verified sub-repositories:

  • Foundation Foods: Modern analytical chemistry data that includes comprehensive nutrient metadata, variability measurements, and agricultural background.
  • Standard Reference Legacy (SR Legacy): Historically authoritative data released by the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, representing decades of peer-reviewed food composition science.

Each food entity on Calorie.Live displays its unique USDA FDC ID, allowing researchers, clinicians, and users to cross-examine any number directly against government laboratory documentation.

2. Standard 100g Basis Weight Normalization

Nutrient density is inherently distorted when presented only in subjective consumer portions (such as "1 piece" or "1 handful"). To ensure strict comparability across our database:

  • All baseline nutritional facts are stored and rendered per 100 grams of edible portion.
  • Serving conversions (e.g. 1 medium banana = 118g) are stored explicitly as validated gram weights, never as mathematical approximations in the user interface.
  • Inedible refuse (such as banana peels, chicken bones, apple cores) is excluded from the basis weight, measuring strictly the consumed portion.

3. Zero Algorithmic Hallucination Policy

Core Engineering Rule: Artificial intelligence models and large language models (LLMs) are strictly prohibited from inventing, estimating, or modifying public database nutrition values on Calorie.Live.

While AI models excel at explaining verified nutritional context, generating meal ideas, or analyzing user meal photos, they cannot replace laboratory spectrophotometry and gas chromatography. All public food and calculator pages derive deterministically from our relational dataset.

4. Preparation States and Water Mobility

Cooking alters moisture content and lipid absorption. Calorie.Live explicitly demarcates preparation states:

  • Raw: Fresh whole state prior to thermal water loss.
  • Cooked / Roasted / Boiled: Retaining standard post-cook moisture levels.
  • Dehydrated / Dried: Concentrated solids with moisture removed.
